In June 2022, the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Geneva Center for Business and Human Rights (GCBHR) will release a new edition of the Toolkit on Addressing Security and Human Rights Challenges in Complex Environments.

The Toolkit offers practical guidance for companies on how to develop responsible security practices in high-risk contexts that pose a range of security and human rights risks, from weak governance to armed conflict. The latest version of the Toolkit will feature new case studies, cutting-edge good practices, practical tools and more.

The Toolkit helps guide companies through contemporary crises such as the Ukraine conflict and ongoing challenges in Myanmar. Organisations such as the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre have already adapted good practices from the new version of the Toolkit into practical advice for companies navigating the Ukraine conflict.

One new feature of the updated Toolkit is the publication of seven standalone fact sheets that provide concise, practical guidance on  a series of key concepts connected to responsible security practices. In the leadup to the launch of the new Toolkit, DCAF, ICRC and GCBHR will release each of the fact sheets:

  • Armed conflict
  • Due diligence
  • Complex environments
  • Gender
  • Human rights defenders
  • Artisanal and small-scale mining
  • Indigenous peoples

Today, we are pleased to release the first fact sheet on security and human rights challenges related to armed conflicts. The fact sheet provides practical guidance on what companies should do to anticipate and respond to situations of armed conflict and practical tips on what to watch out for to ensure respect for international humanitarian law.
